Honored councilmembers, I write to you with the hopes of making you realize the dire situation we find ourselves in.
It all started when the caravan from Allanar failed to arrive on time. Gritt gave me, Koraxk, Amber, Hope and Crow the task of finding out why.
Our first step was contacting the Oracle to find out if it had departed, which it had. We then decided to follow the path towards Allanar hoping to run into the elves on the way. Unfortunately, we instead found their broken-down carriage and signs of battle.
When we opened the carriage, intending to search for survivors, a magical explosion erupted and threw us backwards. A bit dazed but not seriously hurt, we continued our investigation and realized that the carriage was completely cleaned out which made us suspect that the explosion was a trap set by whoever attacked the elves.
Continuing our search, we found some tracks leading to the other side of the river. When I walked over to take a look, an arrow flew past me. Running back to the other side of the water for cover, I saw that we were being attacked by a large number of kobolds. After a short battle we stood victorious with a prisoner for questioning.
While I could understand its language, only Koraxk could talk to it so he interrogated it and tried, in vain, to get it to tell us why it attacked the elves. We did however convince it to take a message to its leaders, a message we wrote in every language our group knew to ensure they would understand. After giving the kobold our letter we let it go, let it run for a short time and then started to follow it.
A few hours later we arrived at the cave, or more correctly hole in the ground, where they apparantly had their base. Climbing down, we started exploring and arrived, without any encounters, at a crossroads. Crow somehow used his sense of smell to decide which path was the most dangerous, a path we concluded was the most used and therefore the one we wanted to explore. Moving through the tunnel we soon arrived at a cave, filled with shining piles gold and jewels.
While the others gaped in awe of the riches I, since I have no interest in a handful of gold, searched for other valuable items and spotted a robe and a sword that looked magical. Carefully, as to not touch the probably cursed gold, I used my magic to slowly lift the robe and bring it towards me. While I was looking for something to wrap it in, Amber decided to touch a coin, which started to turn her clothes into gold causing her to scream. Suddenly, one of the gold piles exploded and a huge dragon burst out and knocked down Amber with its tail. Crow ran back to try and save her but the dragon got its teeth around her legs, biting them off. Hope managed to stun the dragon, giving us enough time to retreat to the crossroads and try to tend to Ambers wounds.
Hope decided that this was a good time to try and recruit followers of Helm and told Amber that she would only get healed if she devoted herself to him. Amber, of course, accepted and Hope gave her new legs made out of metal.
Hearing a cry; Korakx, Crow and me decided to enter another tunnel in search for the missing elves. We happened upon a prison, finding one survivor who we brought back.
Before leaving, I decided we had to know if the dragon could follow us or attack our home. Invisible, I once again entered the dragon’s lair to see if there were any other exits. I had to be careful and avoid touching the cursed gold but also avoid the dragon stomping around, angry at our intrusion. I discovered an exit at the other side, leading to the outside world, big enough for the dragon to pass through. Heading back to my companions, I had to sacrifice my cape to step over some gold pieces that blocked my way to the exit. Heading back to our home, Hope and Amber had the audacity to demand ownership of the robe I retrieved. Since Hope did stop the dragon for a while, I rewarded her with some gold. Amber received a potion of water breathing from me, to use if she fell into the water, since her new legs would probably cause her to be unable to swim. Both of them content with that, we reported back to Gritt and ended this mission.
I would consider the mission a success. We discovered what happened to the caravan and rescued the sole survivor of the kobold attack. We also found the kobold base and discovered that dragons are not as extinct as we thought them to be. We should be prepared to either get attacked or attack.
But even though we, especially Amber, first-hand found out how dangerous dragons are, I am glad that I got to witness a real legend.
